Vote for Backsberg in this year’s Klink Wine Tourism Awards. Backsberg has been nominated for an award in theTread Gently category.
Environmental sustainability has become a major focus at Backsberg since 2006. Considered to be one of the leaders in the field, Backsberg was the first winery in South Africa and third in the World to become Carbon Neutral. A carbon audit is done on an annual basis and the winery offsets it emissions through various energy and fuel saving projects as well as a major tree-planting program. Backsberg is also one of the few wineries in South Africa to boast WWF Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) champion status.
Tread Lightly by Backsberg wines is one of Backsberg’s unique ranges and is packaged in PET bottles, reducing the bottle weight dramatically and thereby resulting in a much lower carbon footprint. The bottle is also fully recyclable. Further efforts include fuel and energy creation projects. A biomass burner to harness electricity and a diesel congester for fuel production are already underway at the farm in the hopes of being a fully energy self-sufficient operation in the next decade.
Vote for Backberg as the wine farm that ‘treads the gentlest’.
