Recently, I had the pleasure of spending the morning with Steve Curwood. Steve runs a US radio programme called Living on Earth. It is weekly show focussing on all things environment. Incredibly, the show has been running continuously since 1991, so Steve is really one of the forerunners of environmental journalism in the USA.
Every week, Living on Earth is broadcasted to over 300 Public Radio stations in the USA, reaching over 80% of the country. As many as a million people would have heard the interview. So, no pressure!
Steve’s interview was set against the backdrop of a recent report from the National Academy of Sciences which makes frightening predications about the changing landscape of the world’s wine growing regions, and the reduction in areas that are suitable to grow grapes, as a result of climate change. The report suggests that the Cape’s wine region could halve by 2050! He wanted to know what we are doing at Backsberg, to combat climate change.
I explained to Steve that our view has been that climate change is a reality, and that we feel we need to take account of our impact as a wine business. We refuse to compromise on wine quality, but feel that you can make great wine, without negatively impacting on the environment – if you are willing to think and act a bit differently. I chatted about the various projects and initiatives we have implemented at the farm, and how we are facing the challenges of climate change.
