The University of Cape Town is taking big strides towards implementing a culture of sustainability, energy saving and environmental consciousness amongst its students and staff.

The Green Campus Initiative or the GCI is made up of passionate students and staff, who volunteer their time, come up with ideas and implement projects to create a sustainable campus – such as conducting research, recycling, raising awareness and converting the campus’ facilities to be environmentally-friendly.

Backsberg Estate Cellars is honoured to promote and support the students at the Annual GCI Backsberg Sustainability Awards 2012.

Since 2010 this award is handed out at a ceremony that celebrates the concepts and the individuals involved. Backsberg Estate Cellars provided a monetary prize and would like to congratulate Dr Hanna-Andrea Rother for scooping the GCI Backsberg Sustainability Award 2012. She played a great role in assisting UCT to reduce exposing staff, students and the campus environment to hazardous chemicals, as well as to move to a more sustainable approach to chemical use and management. This lead to minimising the usage of herbicides and pesticides on the campus.

Dr Rother is also involved in various educational initiatives, such as being the programme convenor of a Post Graduate Programme in Pesticide Risk Management at UCT that focuses on educating professional pesticide regulators and pesticide risk managers in Africa and other developing countries.
